Mysterious Skin-Review

Well I like reviewing things so I decided that is going to be the first thing I review. :)

Mysterious Skin-2004-starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Michelle Trachtenberg, Brady Corbet

This movie is about Neil (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and Brian (Brady Corbet) who both went through the same ordeal at age eight. The ordeal included sexual abuse from their baseball coach. This plight inevitibly caused Neil and Brian to become who the viewer sees throughout the majority of the film: Neil is a gay hustler and Brian is a boy obsessed with UFOs. Though they sound very different they are both very much the same. They are both searching for something. One is searching for the very same feeling he had with his coach when he was a child. The other has completely forgotten what happened to him and is searching for the answer. This heartbreaking film tells the story of two lost souls coming together to begin on their journey of self-discovery and happiness.

Ok, I know I didn't go into that much detail about the plot of this movie but I would like people to get a little idea about it so they can watch it for themselves. This is one of my favorite movies (and no its not because Joseph Gordon Levitt is in it!). This is a very dareing film as I stated before. When I have perused message boards that talk about this movie they always mention the young actors involved. I understand where people are coming from when they say that the actors could be traumatized when they are older and understand what the movie was about but on the other hand the director did give them a completely different script from the adult actors for their safety. I think this was a very good idea and the film wouldn't have been as good without the young actors.

I have to admit I was attracted to see this movie because of Joseph Gordon levitt. Although he did a great job in this movie (like he always does) I thought Brady Corbet had a standout performance. He was able to act as a wounded, momma's boy and even show the anger that his character felt within. His acting was perfect, subtle and very believable. Joseph and Brady both were very good at showing emotion on their faces. Michelle Trachtenberg was OK in this movie...I was indifferent to her perfomance. Also, Bill Sage (who played the baseball coach) had a small role but was very good at being creepy in his time on the screen.

I think this was a great movie that everyone should See! 8.5/10
